1. No you can't hack Toast, Cameo and most certainly not Walkabout with a 9am lecture the next day, you will realise this as you have your head in the toilet regretting all of the decisions you've ever made 10 minutes before your supposed to leave for your lecture. Just don't do it to yourself okay?
2. You're not gonna become BFF's with everyone you meet in the first week and that's okay, or you might and that's amazing! You've got a year to cement friendships, heck even 3/4 years, don't get hung up if you don't have a close-knit group straight away! Don't feel pressure to settle down and immediately find your group of friends. I'm lucky enough to be around such a good lil' group on my course, where we like to go to Zizzi to dish the dirt about others on our course. You may not get along with the entirety of your flat in halls and that's totally fine, just pull your weight and be friendly. And if you do you're flipping lucky, hello 2nd year housemates!
3. You feel like calling your parents crying pretty much everyday whilst looking at your empty fridge and dirty kitchen thanking them for all the little 'everyday' things they did that u never paid attention to. Why do the multiple cups I use in a day no longer re-appear clean in the cupboard.. sigh
4. No matter how hard you try freshers flu will find you and it will not be fun. Currently writing this in bed trying not to die with a mug of lemsip on my bedside table. Just try to stay clear of that person who continuously coughs in every lecture up until January.
5. Expiry dates will make you chubby!! And you won't even mind, halls get cold, you need an extra layer right? Well you might not be thinking that as you try on the itty bitty bodycon dress you just tried on from your Missguided package. At uni throwing food away food is essentially throwing away money , therefore all food must be eaten to avoid any inklings of guilt. I don't care if I have an unopened pack of ham, it goes off tomorrow so I will make it my life's mission to consume it all.
6. Maybe you're not a shameful human being like me, but back home I'm a big advocate of the 'floordrobe,' however at uni I'm not able to fulfil this for a few reasons.
No 1: As you won't have someone constantly cleaning your floor it will get dirty very quickly with dust and general grossness, so dirty that you're forced to go out and buy slippers as you can't walk barefoot on it and so throwing your clothes on the floor is essentially getting them dirty. This then means you have to take them to the laundrette at the bottom of the building which is just... effort.
No 2: Back at home you didn't have groups of people chilling in your room every single day, well maybe you did and I'm just a loner but you can't look like a slob and leave your underwear on the floor, so you're forced to keep your room presentable. Therefore uni makes you have a semi-tidy room which is actually a good thing!
7. Well people do say uni is where you can discover new things about yourself.. here's one! You will definitely discover new depths of laziness that you never thought you possessed. Yes you can get ready in 5 mins and turn up to your lecture in your PJ top. Going downstairs to do laundry? Nope that's way too far and requires too much effort. Empty fridge? Tough asda's a 5 min walk away and I'm too tired for that. (Bet my parents are proud)
8. You will have the realisation of how expensive everything is. All the food I love is so bloody expensive and this makes me sad, oh and foodshops aren't as fun as you thought they'd be. 'I can't wait to cook whatever I want, but no you can't afford what you want. Sorry I'm such a whiny b****, I'm just very hungry okay. Seafood, fish, cheese.. nope you're gonna have to settle for pasta, fish cakes and too much ramen. When your parents come up, make them buy all the nice food you drool over in asda and freeze them! I currently have salmon in my freezer that I'm saving for a bad day.. yes I'm very sad.
9. For the first time ever (if you're an unsociable hermit like me) you will probably use up your monthly calls, back home I hated talking on the phone and only ever texted, unless you were my mum. However at uni texting isn't enough. I think I spoke to my best friend more on the phone and over Facetime this month than the previous few years that's how little we used to speak on the phone! Also me and my friends started using an app called 'Houseparty' which is essentially a big group facetime, which really helped with homesickness. As the majority of my friends are on gap years, you can begin to feel a bit left out of the loop as you see your friends doing stuff without you but this app really helped as I felt like I was hanging out with them as they spilt the tea on their shenanigans back home in Bristol.
10. Lastly most of the time academically and in general life you have no clue what's going on but you're loving every minute of it (besides the list of assignments and assessments that's grows everyday eek!)
